Universidad Viña del Mar

The Universidad Viña del Mar is an accredited, private university with over 25 years of experience providing quality education to its Chilean and international students alike. The UVM is located in the fifth region of Chile, just one and half hours from Santiago and 20 minutes from the historic coastal city of Valparaiso. On top of being considered the university city of Chile, Viña del Mar provides a safe, economically stable environment where students can learn and grow in their knowledge of the culture.

Location

The warmth of its people and the perfect blend of culture and entertainment is what Viña del Mar can offer all those visiting the area, along with safety, a stable economy, museums, cinemas, theaters, outdoor activities, miles of beaches, and great nightlife.

Viña is a coastal town nestled perfectly between the hills of Valparaiso, a World Heritage City, and the sand dunes of Concón, the gastronomical capital of Chile, being only 20 minutes by car from each city. Viña del Mar is also located only one and a half hours from Chile’s capital, Santiago.

To travel within the city as well as to neighboring towns, students can count on an intensive bus system, taxis, “colectivos”, or use our modern metro system. Viña del Mar and Valparíso also have bus terminals where hundreds of travel buses leave hourly to various destinations throughout Chile and Argentina, which makes travel on the weekends more available for our students.

Viña del Mar is known as the “university city” of Chile which makes it an ideal place for international students to study.

Academics

Areas of study open to undergraduate exchange students in English
A semester in English is designed for students enrolled, or interested in, one of the following academic areas: Business, Social Sciences, Humanities, Liberal Arts, and Environmental Studies. Each class has 64 contacts hours which are usually converted into 4 US credits/5 ECTS according to American and European standards.

Upon arriving at our center students are given an oral and written exam to determine their level. Based on their scores you will be eligible to take core Spanish classes and Spanish elective classes. Students with an advanced (C1) level of Spanish will take classes in the Literature and Linguistics department of the university. No previous knowledge of Spanish is required for students to participate in the Spanish Center classes, as we offer courses starting from the beginner level. The UVM respects the home university’s requirements regarding the maximum and minimum courses a student should take while abroad.

Housing

Options
The UVM offers all international students with the possibility to spend their semester living with a Chilean host family. These families have years of experience receiving international students into their homes, and we try to match students to families based on the housing questionnaire included in their application. Host families provide students with a private living space, WIFI, laundry, and three meals a day, along with the experience of living the daily Chilean lifestyle.

If you would like to rent your own apartment we suggest looking for one in the following neighborhoods: Recreo, Agua Santa, Centro, or El Plan for safety and proximity to the UVM campuses.
