University of Helsinki
 
The University of Helsinki is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. Around 36,500 students are currently enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes. University of Helsinki takes part in several exchange programs and each year we welcome about 1000 exchange students from our partner universities!

Location

Helsinki is the capital and largest city of Finland. It is in the region of Uusimaa, located in southern Finland, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, an arm of the Baltic Sea. The Helsinki metropolitan area includes urban core of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and surrounding commuter towns.[8] It is the world's northernmost metro area of over one million people, and the city is the northernmost capital of an EU member state. Helsinki is Finland's major political, educational, financial, cultural and research center as well as one of northern Europe's major cities. 
 

Academics

Areas of study open to undergraduate exchange students

All areas are open to exchange students except the following:

  • Economics, Psychology, Communication, Political Science, Veterinary Medicine and Law have restrictions regarding acceptance (both for local and exchange students). They only accept students who are majoring in the subject in question and have completed enough courses in the discipline in their home university prior to arrival. 
  • Psychology majors should check which of the following is more suitable considering their study background: Social Psychology courses (Faculty of Social Sciences) or Psychology courses (Faculty of Behavioral Sciences)
  • English Philology only accepts students majoring in English. Other foreign languages: student should be a major or minor in the language at the home university.  These studies are considered case by case.
  • English courses offered by the Language Centre are not open for exchange students.
  • Economics and Fac. of Agriculture and Forestry: courses in English offered on Master’s level only 
  • Highly restricted: Medicine, Dentistry. Please contact student exchange coordinator before nominating students for Medicine or Dentistry.

Costs

Estimated Monthly Costs of Living:

All students have to pay for their accommodation and living expenses as well as their books and other study materials. The total monthly living expenses of a single student average from 700 to 1000 euros, depending on your spending habits.
 
For the rent in a student dormitory and residence hall you should budget about 400 euros a month (in a single room). The rent for a studio or family flat is higher; it ranges from 500 to 850 euros a month depending on the flat and the location.

Dorms are not guaranteed, but students can search for housing on the University marketplace, student union apartments, and more.
