The MGU International Student Program (ISP) provides an opportunity for English-speaking students from our exchange partners to pursue undergraduate studies for a semester or academic year at our Shirokane campus. Location

Tokyo and Yokohama are the two biggest metropolises in Japan.

Yokohama Campus
A great, wide space surrounded by rich, green hills. Even goats are being raised on campus for weeding and healing students. 

Tokyo Campus
150 Years of Living History and Culture.
Three buildings on campus are local ward’s cultural property and one of them is a cultural property of Japan. 

Academics

The International Student Program consists of:
1) A mandatory Intensive Japanese Language course divided into 5 levels (6 credits)
2) A selection of elective courses and seminars offered in English by various MGU faculties with a focus on Japanese social and cultural issues (2 credits per class)

Students can register elective courses at both campuses.
*It takes approximately 90 minutes for the transportation between campuses.
Students who have sufficient Japanese proficiency can register specific Japanese taught classes designed for MGU students. Moreover, JLPT N1 certificate holders can register any classes.
 

Tokyo Campus

Classes focused on Japanese social, economic and cultural issues designed for international students.

Yokohama Campus

Classes focused on Japanese social, economic and cultural issues, and Global issues. Classes are provided by the “Department of Global and Transcultural Studies”, which is an all-English-Program.

Language Requirements

Students are required to have studied Japanese for minimum one year at the university level. Exchange students at Meiji Gajuin University must register for a mandatory Intensive Japanese Language course that is divided into 5 levels (6 credits). 
 
A selection of elective courses and seminars are offered in English by various MGU faculties with a focus on Japanese social and cultural issues (2 credits per class)
 
If you plan to take courses taught in Japanese, you are required to have passed Level N1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
 

Preparatory Language Course for Incoming Students

ISP students are required to take the Intensive Japanese Language course at their base campus. However, they may also register for ISP courses offered at the other campus should their daily class schedule allow for the commute between the Shirokane and Yokohama campuses. Program participants should note that the trip between the two campuses roughly takes 1 hour.

  • Health Insurance: Participants to the International Student Program must join the Japanese National Health Insurance Scheme, which automatically covers 70% of most medical/dental expenses incurred in Japan. The premium depends on an individual's income and place of residence, but the figure for students living in Tokyo is normally set around 14,400 yen per year. Arrangements for National Health Insurance, along with the mandatory “Resident Registration”, will be made shortly after arrival as part of overall orientations.

Shirokane-ISP Students
MGU maintains an off campus co-ed dormitory located in Okusawa for its ISP participants. Located in a quiet residential district in central Tokyo, with easy access to both the Shirokane (approximately 30 minutes door to door) and Yokohama (approximately 60 minutes door to door) campuses, the dormitory offers an environment fit for academic pursuit. All students are required to stay in the Okusawa dormitory for admittance to the International Student Program.
The dorm offers single rooms with shared kitchen, shower, bathroom, laundry facilities and lounge area. Rooms come equipped with a desk, chair, closet, bed, linen and internet access.

Single Room (Spring Semester) 200,000yen (for those staying for one semester: April-August)
Single Room (Spring Semester) 250,000yen (for those staying for two semesters: April-September)
Single Room (Fall Semester) 250,000yen (for those staying for one semester only: September-January)
Single Room (Fall Semester) 350,000yen (for those staying for two semesters: September-March)
Deposit 25,000yen (a one-time payment valid for the duration of the student’s stay – to be returned upon checkout in cash minus any fees needed for repair/cleaning above those considered normal “wear and tear”)
The rent is inclusive of all utility costs (electricity, gas, water, internet), but does not include a meal plan. Students are requested to make use of the shared kitchen to cook their own meals at the dorm.
Rent payment is due at the beginning of each semester. Further details are provided to accepted applicants prior to their arrival. Please note that MGU is not able to accept payment of rent on a monthly basis unless otherwise noted in the partnership agreement.

Yokohama-ISP Students
MGU maintains an off-campus co-ed dormitory located in Totsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, for its ISP participants and the other MGU students. With easy access to both the Yokohama (approximately 20 minutes door to door) and Tokyo (approximately 60 minutes door to door) campuses, the dormitory offers an environment fit for academic pursuit as well as for making lifelong friends.  All program participants are required to stay in the Yokohama dormitory.
The dormitory offers single occupancy en-suite rooms with shared dining/lounge hall and laundry facilities.  Rooms come equipped with a desk, chair, closet, bed, linen and internet access.

Single Room (Spring Semester) 240,000yen (for those applying for one semester only)
Single Room (Spring Semester) 360,000yen (for those applying for two semesters)
Single Room (Fall Semester) 300,000yen (for those applying for one semester only)
Single Room (Fall Semester) 420,000yen (for those applying for two semesters)
Deposit 25,000 yen (a one-time payment to be returned upon checkout in cash, minus any fees needed for repair/cleaning above those considered normal “wear and tear”)
The rent is inclusive of all utility costs (electricity, gas, water, internet) and mandatory meal plan. The meal plan consists of breakfast and dinner on weekdays.
Rent payment for the entire semester must be settled in a lump sum by the designated deadline soon after the students’ arrival to Japan.  MGU is not able to accept payment of rent on a monthly basis unless otherwise noted in the exchange agreement.
