The University of Latvia is a university located in Riga, Latvia. Established in 1919, University of Latvia is the largest university in the Baltic states. The university is ranked 701st – 750th in the world. The University of Latvia offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels of study with more than 23,000 students, including PhD and exchange students. The University of Latvia named at that time "The Latvia Higher School" was founded on September 28, 1919 on the basis of the former Riga Polytechnic (founded in 1862). The first rector of the university was chemist Paul Walden. In 1923, this school received its now resumed name – the University of Latvia (Universitas Latviensis).

Location

 Riga is the capital and largest city of Latvia. With 693,064 inhabitants (January 2014), Riga is the largest city of the Baltic states and home to more than one third of Latvia's population. The city is an important seaport and a major industrial, commercial, cultural and financial centre of the Baltic Sea region. Riga was founded in 1201 and is a former Hanseatic League member. Riga's historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for its Art Nouveau/Jugendstil architecture and 19th century wooden architecture. The city is the European Capital of Culture during 2014, along with Umeå in Sweden.

Language Requirements

The University of Latvia offers an Intensive Latvian Language Course free of charge. It is a great opportunity to study one of the still existing Baltic languages. The main objective of the course is to teach the Latvian language, and, of course, give an insight to the Latvian culture, its uniqueness and social aspects of the everyday life. After completion of the course students are able to communicate with locals and use simple phrases and sentences in common social situations, for example, dialogues in shops, public transport, mutual discussions etc.
